FROM THE HEART:
Historical & Contemporary Migrant Art

Our program is called CAMPS, which stands for “Creative Artists Migrant Program Services.” It was founded by Sylvia Kelly, through the Geneseo Migrant Center, over 40 years ago. We have recently transitioned to the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts. This exhibit, curated by CAMPS Coordinator Julia Stewart-Bittle, is our official “Welcome.”

The historical component covers artwork created circa 1980s; the contemporary pieces reflect years from around 2005 to the present. While some drawings were created in a summer program for youth in Sodus, most of the contemporary art was made at the kitchen table in farmworkers’ homes. Quite often, adults on the farms participate in sessions immediately after their 12-hour shifts. Even though tired, they relax into projects that express their lives, dreams, and culture directly from the heart.
