We invite you to join the staff, board and members of Genesee Valley Council on the Arts for our spring opening reception, Thursday, May 3rd 5pm-7pm. Our newest curated New Deal show is titled, The Healing Properties of Art. Our spring awakening exhibit will be a freshly curated New Deal exhibit focusing on the collection in context of the Mount Morris Tuberculosis Sanatarium. Learn about the 20th century history of Murray Hill, the TB crisis in our area, as well as across the nation and how the art of Works Progress Administration Program, the Federal Art Project, aided in healing the patients of the Mount Morris Tuberculosis Sanatarium.
Also opening Thursday, May 3rd 5pm-7pm is a dual show by photographer, Jim Burns and mix media artist Rich Della Costa. Both artists are from the Western New York area and have been creating art for decades. Jim Burns’ series of photographs titled, Hammer and Nails, was “…not expect[ed] to be inspired by the current events right after our last national election, but it was.” Jim has stated that these works were inspired by feelings of uncontrollability of his own future. Rich Della Costa’s series of works are pieces comprised of found objects, combining pieces of junk, discarded metal and glass, or antique objects in new assemblies, comprising a way for the artist to organize the world he sees as chaotic and violent.
Each artist will also give a talk about his works of art; Jim Burns on Saturday, May 12 beginning as 12pm and Rich Della Costa on May 19th beginning at 12pm. Please visit our website, www.gvartscouncil.org or our Facebook page for more information.
We hope you can join us for light refreshments provided by Questa Lasagna and great conversation!
